Fortunately there is a quite simple cure and I made it following the tip from SQ7BCE (you can find others tutorial about this mod on the web) I take the 12V on the tuner connector and not where SQ7BCE does as I found it was neater. BUT, the 706 as another problem, not only mine but all 706, meaning it can get hot very hot and it does even in RX mode, affecting long term stability. I’ve ordered in between a CR-282 as i wanted top specs, it haven’t be necessary as I got after all my adjustement a frequency stability from 0.4 ppm (172Hz) after 2 hours, better than the CR-282. I test my rig and found that although mine was not worst case it was 1.7KHz off frequency after 1 hour so I adjust the reference frequency as mentioned in the service manual and can be spot on after 1 hour. First looking in the specs from my IC-706MKIIG I see that the frequency stability could be as bad as +- 7 ppm from 1mn to 60mns after power on with the standart quartz built in. When the repeaters in my neighborhood started to switch from 1750Hz to CTCSS I noticed that I was unable to open some relays on UHF, quite annoying and I begun to investigate. (I’m looking for a DFK-3B and for an MC-45D, the mic with DTMF encoder, if you have one to sell, send me an e-mail. Please visit my recently started old and vintage microphone blog
